Q: What is orientation?
A: Orientation is a required program for students (optional for parents) that helps them get ready for the start of school. At orientation, we will cover the topics that will help you prepare for and successfully navigate your first year at Ole Miss. You will also register for classes at the orientation session.
Q: Is orientation required for all students?
A: Yes. A hold is placed on your record when you are admitted that will not allow you to register for classes until you attend orientation. The exceptions are as follows:
- Readmitted students who have already taken classes at Ole Miss are not required to attend another orientation session.
- Students who are attending classes only at a satellite campus (Tupelo, Southaven, etc.) are not required to attend. They attend registration at their respective campuses.
- Nondegree-seeking students.
- International students (Contact the Office of International Programs.)
If you qualify as one of these students, then you should contact the Office of Enrollment Services at 662-915-1136 to have your hold removed.
Orientation is required to provide all new students with information about being a successful college student at the University of Mississippi. You will learn specifics about the university’s academic requirements and all the campus resources available to you. Course registration occurs at each orientation session, and, to ensure attendance, students are not allowed to register for their courses until they have attended their orientation session.
Q: How long and during what time is the freshman orientation program? Where is orientation check-in?
A: There are different types of orientation programs based on the type of student and time of the year.
Summer/Fall: Orientation sessions are two days/one night in length. (Students may arrive at the Martindale Student Services Building for early check-in between 6-7:30 p.m. on the evening prior to the beginning of the program. The program will end at 1:30 p.m. on the second day.) Housing is provided for summer/fall orientation. More information about the specifics of your orientation session will be available on your confirmation brochure.
Spring: The orientation session lasts a day and a half; housing is not provided for spring orientation. More information about the specifics of your orientation session will be included in your confirmation brochure.
Q: How do I know that my registration is complete and that my spot is reserved?
A: After you sign up and pay for a session, an email confirming your reservation and payment of orientation fees will be sent to your Ole Miss email account unless you specify that you want it mailed to another email address. In that case, it will be sent to both accounts. If you preregister for an orientation, then you will not receive a confirmation until payment is received in the orientation office.
Q: If I register for orientation and decide to cancel my admission to Ole Miss, can I get a refund?
A: All orientation fees are nonrefundable. Deciding not to attend the University of Mississippi or having your admission rescinded due to poor academic performance does not qualify you to receive a refund of orientation fees. If you decide not to attend Ole Miss, then you are responsible for notifying the Office of Admissions.
Q: If my family member registers and decides not to attend orientation, can I get a refund?
A: No, just as with student fees, all family fees are nonrefundable.
Q: If I’ve been accepted into Ole Miss’ honors program, do I register for a specific orientation session?
A: Yes, we do have an orientation session for honors students, but if you are unable to attend, you can register for any other session available. We will have an honors-specific session for those unable to attend the honors orientation.
Q: Do I need to bring my checkbook for tuition and fees payment?
A: No. The bursar’s office sends out bills for all new students who have attended an orientation session and registered for classes. Your semester fees for tuition, meal plans, housing and parking decal will be included on the bill. Students pay for books separately (usually when picking them up at the beginning of the semester), though many reserve them while at orientation.
Q: Do my parents have to come to orientation?
A: We strongly encourage parents, guardians, significant others and/or other family members to attend orientation. So much information is new and sometimes confusing; it really helps to have at least two sets of ears.
Q: Do I have to stay for the entire session?
A: Yes, if you leave you will miss something important! You’re here to learn about your first year at Ole Miss and get off on the right foot. It’s in your best interest to be here for all sessions.
Q: What forms of payment do you accept for orientation?
A: Visa or MasterCard, debit or credit cards, and bank draft.
Q: Can you apply the orientation charges to the bursar bill?
A: No, we can’t do that at this time.
Q: Do I have to stay in a residence hall during orientation?
A: No, but this option is available at some sessions. Be sure to mark the appropriate box when you register for orientation.
Q: I am having trouble signing up for orientation. What do I do?
A: Check your ID and password, and make sure they are correct. If you think they are the problem, contact our IT Helpdesk at firstname.lastname@example.org or 662-915-5222. If the problem is something else (credit card, etc.), call us at 662-915-7226, or email us at email@example.com, and we’ll help you get it straight.
Q: Will I be able to get the classes I need at orientation?
A: We will do our best to make sure you get the classes you need. We are always able to make sure that students get the classes they need by the first few days of the semester, even if those classes are not available at your specific orientation session. You might need to visit a few professors, an adviser or a dean’s office, but you will be able to build a schedule that works for you. Once you start school, you will be in the regular rotation of advising so you shouldn’t run into any problems in the future.
Q: Can I get my ID made before orientation?
A: You can have your Ole Miss ID card made ahead of time and mailed back to you before your orientation session. If you are staying on campus during your session, you will need your ID card to access the residence hall in which you are staying. Also, two forms of ID are needed to rent a post office box (for example, a driver’s license and student ID). Other advantages of getting your ID made ahead of time are that you won’t stand in line waiting to take your picture at orientation, and you can choose the picture that will be on the ID instead of taking the picture here.

- A photo of yourself (Simple head shots are best, color is preferred. Please, no full-body shots, hats, head coverings or sunglasses; this will cause the ID Center to reject your photo.)
- Your full name
- Your Ole Miss ID number or Social Security number

The ID Center staff will make your ID card and mail it back to you, saving you valuable time while at orientation. For more information, call the ID Center at 662-915-7423, or go to the ID Center’s website.
Q: Can I just see an adviser on my own and not go to orientation?
A: No. While you can visit with an adviser prior to your session, you cannot register for classes at that time. You can register for classes only at an orientation session. Also, remember that orientation provides you with a lot more information than just scheduling classes and only lasts a day and a half. That day and a half can make a lot of difference and is worth it.
Q: Can I meet individually with faculty and staff in certain offices if I need to?
A: Of course. Every orientation session has at least one day when all offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individual appointments can be made. Offices you may be interested in visiting are financial aid, dean’s offices, the bursar’s office and student disability services. You can visit just about anyone else you need to see.
Q: What does it mean to “prepack” books?
A: This means that a student, after scheduling classes, can reserve his or her textbooks with the university bookstore. By filling out a short online form, providing the class schedule and leaving a debit or credit card number, the bookstore staff will pull the textbooks from the shelves, box them up and have them waiting for you when the semester begins. This gives you first shot at used books, which can mean big savings. Prepack is available online or at orientation.

- REGISTER for your classes in myOleMiss. At the end of registration, look for the “order my textbooks” link at the top of the page.
- CONNECT with one click to all of the textbooks you’ll need for your new classes. You’re guaranteed to get the right books.
- BUY all of your textbooks for the upcoming semester. Have them delivered or pick them up during move-in at the bookstore located on the bottom floor of the Student Union.
